> Cross Liechtenstein from north to south in 4 days
> Stay in the only two alpine mountain huts of the Liechtenstein Alpine Club
> Hike the famous Fürstensteig and the best of Route 66

Stand on the airy limestone cliffs of the legendary Fürstensteig and look across three countries at once. Tiny Liechtenstein may be easy to overlook on the map, but on foot it punches far above its weight. The Liechtensteiner Panoramaweg, officially known as Route 66, strings together the very best trails of the Fürstentum into one compact alpine adventure.

In four unforgettable days, you cross the country from north to south through forests, flower-filled alpine meadows, panoramic ridgelines and rugged mountain terrain high above the Rhine Valley.

Along the way, you spend the night in Gafadura Hütte and Pfälzerhütte, the only two alpine mountain huts operated by the Liechtensteiner Alpenverein. Expect a rewarding mix of T2 to T4 mountain trails, including the famous Fürstensteig, with escape routes available on the more challenging sections. Easy logistics, well-marked paths, spectacular views into Switzerland and Austria, and the very best hiking the Fürstentum has to offer. Small country, big mountains. Forza Liechtenstein.

Itinerary

Arrival day

Duration: 04:54 h
Distance: 11.2 km
Ascent: 1210 m
Descent: 250 m

You start in Feldkirch, that historic little gateway to the Alps, with the Ill River nearby and the mountains already calling your name. From town life to hut life in one beautiful sweep, today brings the first proper taste of Liechtenstein mountain magic.

The route leaves Feldkirch behind and gradually climbs into quieter, greener country. Villages and valley views make way for forest trails, open slopes and that lovely feeling of gaining height step by step. As the Alps close in, the world gets smaller, wilder and much more exciting.

You arrive at Gafadura Hütte, a small hut run by Silke and her family. It does not get much more Liechtenstein local than this: warm, simple, personal and tucked into the mountains, with proper hut charm from the moment you step inside.

Gafadura Hütte - Hotel Restaurant Kulm

Duration: 06:41 h
Distance: 15.1 km
Ascent: 740 m
Descent: 1290 m

A strong mountain stage with plenty to keep you looking up: green pastures around Alp Gafadura, the rocky Saroja Pass and the sharp towers of the Drei Schwestern. Open views and rougher alpine sections give this day a proper wild Liechtenstein bite.

After Saroja Pass, the trail climbs through rugged limestone toward Wolan and the Drei Schwestern area. You pass a rock window, the ascent to the Drei Schwestern and steep sections with climbing elements. Around Kuegrat, the highest peak of the group at 2,123 metres, it feels seriously alpine, with Garsellikopf and Gafleispitz nearby.

The descent is long and varied. The Fürstensteig is optional, with alternative ways around it, and should only be taken by confident hikers: it is T4 terrain and not suitable if you fear heights. After Gaflei, calmer paths lead through forest, meadows and Triesenberg to Hotel Restaurant Kulm, right in the village centre.

Hotel Restaurant Kulm - Pfälzerhütte

Duration: 05:15 h
Distance: 13.9 km
Ascent: 1280 m
Descent: 60 m

This stage builds slowly from the Walser village of Triesenberg into open alpine country. Village lanes, forest edges and quiet meadows ease you in before the mountains grow bigger around Steg and the Valüna Valley. Views over the Rhine Valley, Steg Reservoir and the high ridges keep the legs nicely distracted.

After Triesenberg, the trail passes the Stromhäusle Tower, sections of the Walser Legends Trail and viewpoints above the village. It continues toward Steg, with the reservoir and the clear Gänglesee area nearby. After Steg, the climb becomes more serious, leading through the Rappenstein-Sücka area into quieter mountain terrain.

Higher up, the route passes Alp Älpele and Valüna-Waldboden Hut before entering the Naaf Valley. The final climb crosses wide alpine pastures, with views toward Hochspeler at 2,226 metres and Plasteikopf at 2,345 metres. Pfälzer Hütte sits exactly on the Austrian border, run by Steffi and Soffi, two young, excited Hüttenwirten. It is also a fine starting point for a short climb to Naafkopf.

Departure day

Duration: 02:45 h
Distance: 6.27 km
Ascent: 240 m
Descent: 730 m

The final section leads from Pfälzer Hütte back toward Malbun, with one last generous helping of alpine views. The hut sits high on the ridge, exactly on the Austrian border, before the route turns toward open slopes, wide skies and the green bowl of Malbun.

A beautiful option is the Fürstin-Gina-Weg, which runs via Augstenberg at 2,359 metres and gives this ending a proper mountain flourish. It is not the same as the Fürstensteig, but it still brings ridge walking, big views and that lovely feeling of floating above Liechtenstein for a while.

You arrive in Malbun, a small alpine village surrounded by green slopes and peaks. After the final descent, take time to breathe it all in before heading home or travelling on. Quiet, scenic and very mountainy, it is a fine place to let the whole route sink in.
