> Explore the wild Pyrenees on a 5-day hut-to-hut trek
> Hike past lakes, high passes, and granite ridges
> Stay in authentic refuges in Aigüestortes National Park

The Half Carros de Foc showcases the best of Aigüestortes National Park in a shorter and more accessible itinerary. Over five days, you connect four of the park's most iconic mountain refuges while hiking past glacial lakes, crossing mountain passes, and enjoying the rugged landscape that has made the Carros de Foc one of Europe’s classic hut-to-hut treks.

Although this is a beginner-friendly hut-to-hut trek, the terrain is still typically Pyrenean. Expect narrow and uneven trails, rocky sections, loose stones, and regular steep ascents and descents. Good balance, a solid level of fitness, and some previous experience hiking on mountain trails are therefore recommended.

This route is a great introduction to hut-to-hut trekking for hikers who are already comfortable on rugged mountain terrain. It offers a rewarding balance of manageable distances, authentic refuge stays, and impressive Pyrenean scenery without the longer days of the full Carros de Foc.

Itinerary

Day
1

Espot - Refugi Ernest Mallafré

Duration: 02:40 h
Distance: 7.8 km
Ascent: 580 m
Descent: 10 m

You leave Espot on easy paths across grassy fields, with the route rising steadily from the start. With around 580 m of ascent, this is a moderate climb rather than a difficult one, and the gradient builds gradually as you move higher. The first part feels open and relaxed, giving you time to settle into the rhythm before the trail becomes more enclosed and heads towards the forested upper section.

After about 5 km, a boardwalk section appears on and off, guiding you towards the forest. On a sunny day, this shaded part is a welcome change after the open fields. The path continues climbing slowly through the trees until you reach the top of the main ascent near Lake Sant Maurici, where the views become the highlight of the route and the high mountain surroundings start to feel much closer.

From Lake Sant Maurici, the approach to Refugi Ernest Mallafré is straightforward and short. If you arrive early, take time to enjoy the nature around the lake and the quieter atmosphere at altitude before settling in at the hut.

Day
2

Refugi Ernest Mallafré - Refugi de l'Estany Llong

Duration: 03:40 h
Distance: 8.1 km
Ascent: 560 m
Descent: 460 m

After breakfast, the trail climbs gradually through alpine forest and grassy slopes towards the higher Aigüestortes area, known for its winding waters, streams and wooden bridges. This section is a little tougher than the previous one, with around 560 m of ascent and a more rugged feel as you gain height. The first paths are still fairly even, with open mountain scenery around you, but the terrain gradually becomes rougher as the climb builds.

After about 2 km, loose stones become more common, so you need to place each step carefully. This is a typical part of walking through the rocky Pyrenees. As you continue higher, the paths grow narrower and stonier, with some sections running along sloping ground. Keep a steady pace towards Portarró d'Espot, the highest point of the route at around 2400 m, where wide mountain views make it a good place to pause.

From Portarró d'Espot, the route heads downhill for the rest of the stage. The path becomes a little more manageable at the top, giving your ankles some relief after the rocky climb, though the descent towards Estany Llong is still steep in places. Keep the lake on your right as you follow its clear water through the high valley, where marmots may appear along the trail. Not long after passing the lake, you reach Refugi de l’Estany Llong.

Day
3

Refugi de l'Estany Llong - Refugi Colomina

Duration: 05:10 h
Distance: 11.4 km
Ascent: 810 m
Descent: 400 m

You start with a climb again, and this time the terrain feels remote from the first steps. The path is immediately uneven and rocky. The 1200 m of altimeters over 11.4 km, makes this a demanding stage for beginners. As you gain height through alpine terrain, the trail stays narrow in places and the landscape opens towards lakes and surrounding valleys. This is one of the more adventurous sections, so take your time and leave early.

While climbing past the first lakes, the path remains small, with occasional drops beside the trail. Just before the highest point, Collada de Dellui, there is a steeper climb, but this section lasts no more than about a kilometre. From the pass, you begin descending towards Lake d'Eixerola. The descent starts steeply, then quickly becomes more even, with lakes appearing on both sides of the route.

The views are at their best when you reach the old train tracks, where mountain peaks, history and clear alpine lakes come together in one place. After leaving Lake Tort, the route climbs gently once more before the final kilometre to Refugi Colomina. The hut sits beside an alpine lake, a fitting place to rest after a long and rocky crossing.

Refugi Colomina - Refugi Josep Maria Blanc

Duration: 02:50 h
Distance: 6.7 km
Ascent: 290 m
Descent: 380 m

You start with a beautiful walk along the shores of the lakes beside the hut, with peaceful views over Estany Colomina and the surrounding water. In terms of profile, this is a quieter section, but the surface keeps it very much a mountain hike. Much of the route follows loose stones and rocky paths, so stable footing matters from the first kilometres. Hiking poles can be useful here, especially if you prefer extra balance on uneven ground.

The mountain lakes are the highlight of this section, often very clear because much of the water comes from melted snow. After leaving the lakes behind, the route climbs twice in short but steep bursts. Once higher up, the views open across the mountains and the rough, almost lunar landscape around you. Soon after these climbs, the descent begins. It is generally steady, with a few sharper sections where the loose stones ask for careful steps.

As you descend towards Refugi Josep Maria Blanc, the lakes begin to guide the route again. When you see the dam in the distance, shaped almost like a staircase, you are close to the hut. Refugi Josep Maria Blanc sits in a remarkable lake setting, a peaceful place to arrive after a rocky but rewarding mountain walk.

Refugi Josep Maria Blanc – Espot

Duration: 02:45 h
Distance: 7.11 km
Descent: 990 m

Wake up to the gentle reflection of the peaks shimmering on the lakes below the refuge. After breakfast, begin your descent toward Espot. The first part still follows the familiar Carros de Foc terrain, with loose rocks and stony paths where careful footing is needed. It feels like one last true mountain section before the route gradually becomes more accessible.

With nearly 1,000 meters of descent, this final stage is full of variety. As the rocky ground slowly evens out, the trail leads you down towards the valley through forests, wooden bridges and open meadows filled with wildflowers. The sounds of flowing streams and distant cowbells accompany you along the way. When Espot appears in the distance, the sense of completion starts to build.

Back in Espot, take a moment to reflect on your Carros de Foc adventure, with its mountain trails, shared laughter and the quiet beauty of Aigüestortes National Park. A few last steps, a few last smiles and maybe an ice cream in the village make a fitting end to these unforgettable days in the Pyrenees.
