> Fall asleep under the Northern Lights
> Hike Arctic summits by day, watch the sky by night
> Warm up in a cozy lodge after every adventure

The Lyngen Northern Lights Trek is an 8-day Arctic adventure on the island of Uløya in the Lyngenfjord, Northern Norway, in October, when the long Arctic nights return and the aurora season is at its best. By day you hike to summits, glacial lakes and wild beaches, and at night you watch the Northern Lights dance above the fjord.

Expect summit views over the open ocean and its scattered islands, golden autumn forests, glacial lakes and a thundering waterfall deep in Reisa National Park. And in the middle of the week, we arrange a private boat day on the fjord, where you can fish between the islands.

The hiking is relaxed, with day trips of 5 to 7 km and ascents of 500 to 1,000 meters, perfect for beginners and anyone who prefers an easy pace. This is a premium Arctic experience where everything is arranged for you, from guided hikes to a cozy lodge far from any light pollution, all designed to give you the best possible Northern Lights experience.

Bjorkestol - Arontinden - Bjorkestol

Duration: 05:00 h
Distance: 10 km
Ascent: 560 m
Descent: 560 m

This hike starts with a short transfer to Bjorkestol, where the trail to Arontinden begins. The route is short but rewarding, with a steady 560 m climb to the summit and the same descent on the way back. It starts between the trees before opening onto stony ground, where the views quickly become wider. Arontinden rises above the north-eastern tip of Uløya, overlooking both the Lyngenfjord and the open ocean.

The ascent usually takes around three hours, with about two hours for the return. From the summit at 560 m, there is a fantastic panorama over the Lyngen Peninsula, the surrounding archipelago and the point where the Lyngenfjord opens out towards the sea. The northern face of Arontinden drops steeply towards the ocean, adding to the dramatic feel of the viewpoint. Wildlife is often part of the experience here, with chances to see moose, reindeer, birds and eagles.

Lyngen Outdoor Center - Lyngen Outdoor Center

Duration: 03:00 h
Distance: 7.5 km
Ascent: 1000 m
Descent: 598 m

This hike starts directly from the lodge and leads into the wild mountain landscape of Uløya. The route begins through arctic woodland before climbing into more open terrain, passing the impressive Mettengelva waterfall along the way. After a few hours, you reach Isvannet, a large mountain lake at around 600 m, set inside a dramatic glacial cirque beneath Uløytinden. The combination of steep mountain walls, open terrain and the remote lake makes this one of the most striking landscapes on the island.

Those looking for a longer and more demanding day can continue towards Sæteraksla at around 1000 m. From higher up, the views open across the Lyngen Alps, the Kåfjord Alps and the Rotsund Strait below. The southern side of the mountain drops steeply towards the fjord, creating a dramatic sense of height from the summit. The descent follows the same way back to the lodge, with chances along the route to spot moose, reindeer, birds and eagles.

Fishing Day

Duration: 03:00 h

This is a relaxed sea fishing day, giving your legs a proper rest while you head out by boat. All equipment is provided, so you can simply step aboard and enjoy the 3-hour trip. From the water, you get a different view of the island scenery, with open sea around you and the coastline in sight. It is a calm change of pace after the walking stages, but still a full outdoor experience.

During the trip, there is plenty to watch besides the fishing itself. The waters around the island are a good place to spot seabirds, and eagles may also be seen along the way. With some luck, dolphins can appear near the boat, making the outing even more memorable. The main aim, of course, is to fish, with the chance to catch a large cod or even a halibut.

After the fishing trip, you return to shore and continue to your accommodation. The rest of the day is easy, with time to relax, enjoy the catch of the day if possible, and take in the island atmosphere without putting extra strain on your legs.

Along the way, you’ll experience ancient forests, open mountain scenery and the quiet, untouched atmosphere that makes this part of northern Norway so special.

As you hike deeper into the landscape, keep an eye out for eagles, rare birds, moose and reindeer. The highlight of the day is Sarafossen itself, where the waterfall drops dramatically through the rugged surroundings. After taking in the views and the peaceful wilderness of the Reisa National Park area, you return along the same route and head back to the lodge, where the evening brings another chance to look out for the Northern Lights if conditions are favourable.

Klauvnes - Klauvnes

Duration: 03:00 h
Distance: 7 km
Ascent: 150 m
Descent: 150 m

Today you discover one of Uløya’s lesser-known coastal gems. After a short drive from the lodge, you set out from Klauvnes and follow a beautiful trail along the island’s northern side. The landscape constantly changes as the path rises and falls between rocky beaches, open meadows and unusual rock formations shaped by the sea.

Along the way, you’ll pass natural rock arches, isolated pinnacles and beaches covered with smooth, ocean-polished stones. With only gentle elevation changes, this is a more relaxed hiking day and a chance to slow down and enjoy the wild coastal scenery. After completing the loop back to Klauvnes, you return to the lodge for another evening in the Arctic, with the possibility of seeing the Northern Lights if the sky is clear.

Hamna - Hamna

Duration: 05:00 h
Distance: 7 km
Ascent: 450 m
Descent: 450 m

Today takes you to Kågen Island, where a scenic drive brings you to the starting point near Hamna. From here, you follow a gentle trail into the impressive Valhalla Valley, gradually leaving the coast behind as the mountains close in around you. After about an hour of hiking, the valley begins to reveal its full scale, with steep rock faces and a remote, almost untouched atmosphere.

Deeper in the valley, you reach a picturesque mountain lake beneath the enormous Valhalla Wall, a striking granite face rising around 550 metres above the valley floor. The setting is dramatic and peaceful, making this one of the most memorable mountain landscapes of the trip. After taking time to enjoy the scenery, you follow the same route back to Hamna before returning to the lodge.
