Difficulty & safety: T-rating, Schwarzkogelsteig (T4) and alternatives
T4 explained: short exposed section. Requires sure-footedness, no fear of heights and experience.
When to avoid: rain, strong wind, thunderstorms or if anyone in the group feels uncertain.
Family detour (T2–T3): ask huts for current kid-friendly alternative for day 3. Expect +30–45 min.
Gear: sturdy boots, rain/warm layers, first aid kit, map/GPX, headlamp. Helmet/gloves optional but useful.
Decision point: agree beforehand that turning back is fine. Safety first.
Getting there: Gosau and Filzmoos (car & public transport)
By car: Park near Gosau (start). From Filzmoos return by bus/taxi, or hike the route in reverse.
By public transport: Train to nearest station, then bus/taxi to Gosau; return from Filzmoos. Check seasonal timetables.
Luggage: pack light — huts have limited space.
Practical information: huts, half board and reservations
Huts: Gablonzerhütte, Theodor-Körner-Hütte, Hofpürglhütte (rooms/dorms).
Half board: usually available; inform huts of dietary needs. Child portions possible.
Payment: some huts cash-only → bring enough cash.
Water & snacks: refill in huts; not always available on the trail.
Season: late June – mid-September is ideal (huts open, snow-free trails).
