Find that one special trekking
Manon knows the Austrian Alps like the back of her hand: in hiking boots, on a snowboard, and most of the time on skis. She was a ski instructor for 10 years until she shifted her focus to summer hiking. Born and raised in the Netherlands, she is Austrian by second nature.
A love affair with Austria
Manon grew up in the east of the Netherlands, close to the Dutch-German border. From a young age she was introduced to the mountains. “I was lucky my parents absolutely loved the mountains. Each winter we went on skiing holidays in the Austrian Alps and when I was a little older, we also spent our summers in Austria. My mom is a hiking enthusiast, and eventually I became one as well.” What really draws Manon to the Austrian Alps is the peace and quiet and the freedom to roam in nature. But why Austria? “It’s a combination of people and the variety of adventures you can do there. Austrians are a little conservative, but they are true mountain people. That makes me connect with the country.” Apart from spending time in the mountains, diving is another passion. Her ideal place to live would be where both mountains and sea are within a stone's throw from her home.
Cherishing strong partnerships
At Bookatrekking.com Manon started as the Trekking Expert for Austria and Germany in May 2023. She helps trekkers with finding and planning their perfect trek. As the trekking possibilities are endless in this part of the Alps, she also develops exciting new hut to hut treks, such as the Watzmann Tour and a spicy hike to Germany’s highest mountain Zugspitze. What Manon loves most about her job? “The contact with our local partners is the best part of my work. Building a trusted relationship with the hut wardens truly makes a difference in the ability to organize our tours. That’s crucial when flexibility is needed and they are willing to go the extra mile for us. It makes my job very rewarding.” Which trek is still high on her list? “The Berliner Höhenweg!”
