High and Remote

Jan discovered his love for mountains in the Scottish Highlands 25 years ago. That passion for mountains evolved into a career in mountain tourism. For many years he has worked as an expedition leader, taking groups into remote, high-altitude mountain ranges in countries like Nepal, Tajikistan, Uganda and Chile. Any favorites? “The Pamir Mountains are high up there. The region is not well-known, so when you go trekking there you have to do a lot of research, which to me is half the fun! I decided to write a guidebook about this amazing mountain range which resulted in the Cicerone publication of Trekking in Tajikistan.” Other things that keep him ticking? “I currently live in Uganda with my family. As the proper mountains are not closeby, I love taking my gravel bike on the African dirt roads. I think both cycling and hiking take you to the heart of a country, where all your senses go into overload. It’s the best way to get to know a place from within.”

Exotic Trekking Experiences For All

Jan has been with Bookatrekking.com since January 2023. All of his mountain knowledge and experience come together in his position as the Trekking Expert for Asia and most African destinations. He writes in-depth articles about trekking experiences on these continents, creating exciting new trips and if you have any questions about these guided treks, Jan is your man. The most common question? “Many people doubt themselves, whether they have enough experience or if they are fit enough to do a certain trek. With the right mindset and physical preparation I think almost every trekking trip that Bookatrekking.com offers is doable. We work with top notch local partners, who hire the best guides in the field.” What is your top tip for anyone going on a big trek in the high mountains? “Bring your favorite snacks from home. Comfort food goes a long way when the going gets tough. Mine are Dutch stroopwafels!”
