Who is Sierd van der Bij?

Sierd is a writer at heart, and most of the things he enjoys outside work somehow come back to being outdoors, moving through landscapes and meeting people along the way. When he was younger, he spent a lot of time hitchhiking, often travelling with very little more than a rough direction in mind and seeing where the road would take him. That curiosity never really disappeared. He is an Honorary Ranger with South African National Parks, is involved with Wilderness Search & Rescue, and helps organise Ultra-trail Cape Town. Over the years he has travelled to more than 50 countries and speaks six languages, something that has shaped the way he looks at places, cultures and the stories people tell about them. When he is not writing or working on a project, there is a good chance he is trail running, cycling, surfing or hiking somewhere around Cape Town or further afield. For Sierd, being outside is not just a hobby. It is where a lot of his ideas come from, where he clears his head, and where some of the best stories tend to start.

Sierd's in-depth trekking expertise

Sierd has been part of Bookatrekking.com since day one. In the early years that meant doing a bit of everything, from writing and customer communication to building content and helping shape the way Bookatrekking.com talks about trekking. Today, his main focus is the content published across all our channels. He works on articles, videos, social content, field trips and new formats that help bring trekking destinations and the people behind them to life. He is also our Trekking Expert for Kilimanjaro, sharing his knowledge of Africa’s highest mountain, and hosts Goatcast, our podcast about the people, stories and culture behind trekking. What he enjoys most is getting close to the subject, whether that means heading into the Alps to film a hut-to-hut trek, speaking with a hut warden or mountain guide, or finding a story that goes beyond simply describing a route.
