The best time for trekking in Nepal? In the Himalayas, the mountains dictate the weather. Forecasts are hard to make when giants like Mount Everest, Manaslu, Lhotse, and Annapurna are in the way of changing weather patterns. Regardless of the weather, trekking can be done throughout the year. In this blog post, the trekking seasons and the best time of the year to trek in Nepal will be explained.
Last update: July 2022
Just like in most corners of the world, there are four distinct seasons in Nepal. Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn all have their own characteristics and charm. Because of that, there is no definitive answer when the question about the best trekking season rises. However, the seasons can help you determine your preferred month to plan your visit to Nepal.
Spring - Trekking in Nepal in March, April & May
A preferred season for Nepal trekking is spring. Temperatures will be higher, the weather patterns will be more stable and the flowers will begin to bloom. As the climbing season for Mount Everest will commence, Everest Base Camp will be full of climbers you can chat to. Temperatures will vary between 16 and 23 degrees Celsius during the day. The warmer nights will be appreciated and there are generally less trekkers on the trails than in for example autumn. If you are considering the Annapurna Circuit Trek, then this is your season. It is your best chance to see rhododendron in full bloom and to spot the most beautiful birds. Another great area to explore in spring is the Langtang valley.
Summer - Trekking in Nepal June, July & August.
Summer in Nepal lasts from June to August and although you might not expect it when seeing the snow-capped peaks, it does get warm. In fact, it will be humid. This is because summer in Nepal means monsoon season. This season does not attract a lot of adventurers to the Himalayas. The rains are known to wash away bridges, trails become very slippery and public transport becomes unreliable. Not ideal, but there are definitely great options for trekking during monsoon season. Although it can be difficult to get there in summer, the Upper Mustang Trek is a great option as the area remains relatively dry. The Dolpa region with the Upper and Lower Dolpo is also a great option for this time of the year.

Autumn - Trekking in September, October & November
If you really want an answer to the question when is the best time to trek in the Nepal Himalayas, then autumn would be it. The weather will be perfect and the views will be mesmerizing. As the temperatures are slowly but surely dropping, there may be a snow storm or two that drop a load of fresh snow on the high peaks. As autumn is considered to be the best season for a trekking, you will definitely not be alone on the trails. Temperatures are ranging from 22 to 27 degrees Celsius during the daytime and nights are cool. In September you can have some leftovers from Monsoon season and it can still rain in the afternoons. High Passes can be difficult to cross but generally, you should have no problems. As October is knocking on the door, your path will be clear. No rains and Nepal will start to celebrate. Indra Jatra or Yenya, the festival that celebrates the end of the Monsoon season, is usually held late September or early October. These special celebrations can make your visit to Nepal complete.
Winter - Trekking in Nepal in December, January & February
Winter means snow, also in Nepal. At higher altitude, this can make things challenging, but generally, winter is a great season for trekking. As the autumn beauty gets covered in a blanket of snow, people come to the Himalayas to enjoy the trails on lower altitude and to experience the mountains in a fairytale wintery way. It comes along with a melancholic feel and the experience be very charming. As there are lesser crowds and the scenery is beautiful, this is a great option for the trekker who wants to have a more unusual Himalayan adventure. The Ghorepani Poonhill Trek, also known as the Annapurna Sunrise Trek, is one of those trekkings that are totally worth it in winter.
